Meet Roberts Roan Quincy, a 1998 bay roan AQHA gelding. Bob is one that we've raised. He is 16 hands tall and tips the scales at 1400 pounds. He's got great bone and feet, sporting a "dainty" size three shoe up front. Bob has been a real asset as our main "get it done" man. He is one of very few horses that can do any aspect of ranch work day in and day out without issue. Anyone can ride him, including our young kids, he has no bad habits. He's sweet, hardworking and easy on the eyes. Bob also gets to go to town for barrel racing and ranch horse competitions. He won the 2005 ND Horsefest Ranch Horse Competition Ladies Division with Brenda on board. He earned the second high score overall, against the Men's Division, where there were 20 more possible points! He was started on barrels during the summer of 2005, and has competed in BBR, NWBRA and NBHA barrel racing events. He's been to Oklahoma City to the BBR finals (where he pulled a check), to Gillette for the NWBRA finals twice and to Bismarck and the state NBHA finals twice. In 2006 he was 4th in the 3D average at the state NBHA. He usually runs toward the top of the 3D, but he ranges from the 2D to the 4D, depending on how well he's getting fed! :)
Captain is a 1995 sorrel tobiano gelding. He stands about 15 hands and will weigh just over 1000 pounds. He is another horse we bought from the Solid Foundation Ranch, and we've been happy with him. He hadn't been used in a few years, so it did take a fair amount of time to get him soft and quiet again. He's a firecracker! Cow wrestling is his claim to fame- he pays no attention to the screamin', snot blowing cows that would scare the life out of most horses. He'll take a bumping and not get upset in the least. He's got a Ph. D. in being tough- in more than one way! He's spent plenty of quality time with the "thinking post," learning how to focus all that energy on the job instead of digging holes. The good news is, we should be ready to install a basement, septic tank or bury a time capsule in the hole that he's dug. After 45 days of hard-time calving duty, he no longer raises a toe to bother digging. He's learned that it might end up being a long day! He should be great on those hot, 15 hour summer days of tracking cattle in the badlands! He's proven that he will not be wore out by work, and is a very honest, hard working dude.
BR Fritz Command ( Montelius) is a big
2002 model bay gelding. He already measures 16+ hands and weighs over 1200
pounds. He put in some good hours last summer, and is going to be a really
awesome ranch horse soon! He's been to the badlands a lot, and is
naturally good on his feet. He's not being treated much like a
colt, other than his lighter work load. He gets saddled, hauled and
cinched up like a grown-up. Monte is a real "get-it done" horse, even as a
4 year old. He gets hauled now as a horse that we know we can rely on to
do a tough job. He is very aggressive with cattle and won't take his eye
off them once he's locked on. He cuts cattle like a little horse- in the
dirt and super catty! He
is another one that we raised, out of the same mare as Bob. His sire, Red
Dee Fritz, is a son of the great Friendly Fritz. Montelius has a
big, big motor and should be a header's dream and a great barrel
prospect. He moves classy enough and has enough scope to really
excel in the English show pen. He's already been hauled to some
events and will have wheels under him a lot this summer. Watch for him at
the barrel races in 2007!
Jess Copy
"Jim (also known as JC)" is a son of Jess Special (Mr Jess Perry x daughter of Special Effort) and out of an own daughter of Duplicate Copy (Go Man Go). He came to us courtesy of our good friend, Jamie, who is a QH Race horse trainer from Louisiana. Jamie spends time in ND when she can, and knew that Jim would fit right in here. Jim is smart and quiet and has had some pasture and trail riding since his arrival in late July. He has a great start on the barrels, and might be futuritied as a 5 year old. He's coming along better than I expected and we're excited about his potential. He'll be part of the calving crew in a few months, won't that be a switch for him? hehehee Click here for more pictures of Jim- watch him as he changes from race horse to ranch horse!
Blanton's Blue Sage
Sage is a pretty mare with a big attitude! She is a go-getter and is really doing well for her age. Perry has roped off her a lot, and she has one season of calving under her belt already. She was raised and started by Andrea Buerkle, and we're excited that we got the chance to own her. She'll travel rough country all day. Sage can watch a cow and in a few years, she will be one of the best sorting horses in the land! Right now, she's getting miles and wet saddle blankets, trying to figure out that it's easiest just to get her buns to work and not bother with the nonsense. I guess they all need some of that!
Beduinos Cash Jet
This is "Daisy," a 6 year old mare that we were lucky enough to nab out of a loose horse sale in Dickinson in September. She came from a man in Medora, who had ridden her quite a bit until she was 4 and was bred. She weaned a really exceptional filly after the sale and went right to work here at the ranch. She is all business and handles herself extremely well in big country and knows cattle. She's really gritty, but has a tendency to hump up and buck. We are working with Dickinson Chiropractor, Dr. Jennifer Meyer, to try to figure out what is causing this issue. It seems to be a "pain thing," and we're confident that Dr. Jennifer with get it fixed. Daisy has been started on the barrels, and has a perfect amount of natural rate. Daisy seems to enjoy running barrels, and her grit is a real asset in the arena. She is high loping a nice pattern, and will be hauled soon!
Moxis Smokey Too Thunder
Does a picture really say a thousand words? This one sure does! We bought Thunder from the Boy's Ranch in Minot last fall. He has special nutritional needs and needs to be fed like CRAZY to keep any weight on him. It's worth it, though- he is careful with the kids and is teaching them how to enjoy riding. He may be old, but he is still responsive and will even LOPE if he thinks the kids are sure that's what they want. He's been tagging along to the barrel races and Nick clocked a blazing 75 second run on him on him in August. Elli runs him, too- but she and Thunder follow Bob through the pattern still. Elli has the need for speed, and at the ripe old age of 3, Mom still needs to throttle her down.
Waiting in the wings...
TK Special Win Buerkles Crockett
Crockett is a 2005 model grey gelding that Perry got in trade for riding a mare for Andrea Buerkle. He's bred for performance and looks like a winner! A cuter head has never been seen like the one this guy sports. He's enjoying green grass and the company of Junior for the summer of 2006!
This is Shadowed Diamond, a 2001 bay tobiano mare,
affectionately nicknamed "Joni Bucker" by our 3 year old daughter.
Joni is bred to fly! Her sire is Treasured Shadow (Treasured Too) and her dam, Diamond is Forever, is an own daughter of Kitaman. For
her complete pedigree, click this link:
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/shadowed+diamond.
Joni is still a little green, but is only lacking miles and wet saddle blankets. She is a smart mare, so her training
is advancing quickly. Joni's great with lateral movement and collection.
She can side pass, half pass, two track. In addition, she can move her
shoulder and hip independently and complete both front and hind pivots.
She's soft in the face, poll, neck, shoulders, ribs and hips. She's already been to the badlands and crosses the
creeks and rivers like an old pro! JB is a big, free mover and is quiet
and nearly spook-free on the trails. We used her for cow work last fall and she'll
be doused in wet saddle blankets this summer.
This mare was purchased
from Dakota Stables in
Dickinson, ND. They have many very nicely bred horses for sale at this
time! Joni is the second horse we've purchased and one of many we've
ridden for Dakota Stables.
