The Cattle
While the commercial beef cattle help support the viability of the ranch, they aren't as exciting as the ultra-small herd of 25 longhorn cows that the Ranch runs. We cross the purebred longhorn cows with a horned Hereford bull to maintain the strong horn bases on the calves and encourage efficient beef production on butcher animals. Every year, we are able to offer 15-19 very uniform longhorn cross roping "steers" (both steers and heifers). The remaining 6-10 that are either too big or too small to rope are fed as butchers. Our customer list for this home-raised antibiotic and hormone free beef grows ever year. Our longhorn beef topped a blind taste test among 4 other breeds- all of similar backgrounds. The hamburger is very lean and the steaks are tasty and tender. We'd be happy to invite you to a steak dinner at the ranch to sample some of the best beef in the west!
