Our beef cow herd is predominately Angus, with some moderate framed Simmental influence. Bulls are purebred or AI sires. We use Simmental sires with Black Irish and Black Mick breeding and Angus bulls from Sitz Angus in Harrison, MT. We calve from Mid- February through March and generally deliver our calves in December. The ranch raises its own feed base and adds diversity and value by backgrounding the calves each year. Of course, there are exceptions, but Perry sure enjoys watching the calves come to the bunk! The calves are weaned on long stemmed grass hay and soon move in to a chopped hay and silage ration with an increasing amount of grain added gradually. Our replacement heifers are raised on a moderate ration with an ADG of less than 2 pounds as the target. All calves are on a full vaccination and deworming program and are sorted in the lot according to sex and size.
The cows and calves are handled and doctored by horseback. This picture was taken April 15, 2006 as Perry and Bart slap a loop on a sick calf in the spring pasture. Bart is for sale, $4500.
