In a Nutshell...

The ranch specializes in diversity.  Along with a large farming operation, we raise commercial black cattle.  Our cow herd is largely Angus, with a splash of Simmental influence.  Our calving season is usually around 55 days, beginning February 10th.

The longhorn herd has mainly been a hobby, starting with some purebred cows in the early 1990's.  Their calves are sired by a horned Hereford bull and born later in the spring, usually in the month of May.  These calves are marketed either in the fall as roping calves, or the following spring as team roping or bulldogging stock.  Calves that do not uniformly match the main group are kept back to market as butchers.  The crossbred beef offers the best of all worlds with the lean, tender cutability of the longhorn, combined with perfect marbling and flavor from the Hereford.  The cross is very efficient in the feedlot, even after being roped for several months!  Our beef is sold on the rail, and we can make sure that it is cut and wrapped to your specifications.  References available!

We also sell a few select horses every year.  We are in the ranching business and do most of our cow work from the back of a horse.  Our horses have seen a day's work, big country, wet saddle blankets and LOTS of cattle.  They have been roped off and are dragging baby calves as 4 year olds.  We start most of our colts as two year olds with 15-30 days of light riding and learning the basics.  Then we turn them out until they are 3.  Depending on their physical and mental maturity, they are then ridden for another 30-60 days and turned out until calving season.  As coming 4 year olds, the "kids" go to school!  They will be sharp-shod and put to work on a 50% workload.  They might have to spend an overnight tied and saddled in the barn when calving is rolling hard (or if they are naughty!).  They'll drag new babies into the barn, sort heavy cows and spend countless hours studying the anatomy of a cow's rear end.  They learn patience and work ethic.  Within a week, they generally decide it is much easier to just get a job done, rather than waste time and energy with nonsense.  The summer of their 4 year old year, they are used to check fence, water and move herds to new pastures.  The cycle continues until they are at 100% workload the summer of their 5 year old year.  As 5 year olds, most of the horses start an arena education- roping, barrels or both.  We are firm believers in the idea that the more jobs a horse has, the happier and more well rounded they are.  Most are ridden English and have a good foundation in Dressage, as well as western performance events like reining and working cow horse.  They are hauled to barrel racing jackpots, shows and rodeos as early as 2 years old, just for exposure and socialization.  We enjoy riding both mares and geldings- and on a rare occasion, a stallion.  Click here to meet our current saddle horses- Some of them are priced and you are welcome to ask about any of them!
